Serena Applauds Moment In Time

By Craig Gabriel,

With Barack Obama the 44th President of the United States of America now sworn in, America has taken a giant step forward and it's a moment in time that has not been lost on anyone, least of all Serena Williams.

"This is an amazing moment for American history," said Serena proudly. "The other day was Martin Luther King's birthday and to have his birthday and Obama's presidency fall so close to each other is something special.

"I was watching the television here in Melbourne before I went out to play and I looked at my arm, and I literally had chill bumps.

"I'm a big fan of African American history, learning my roots so I can be a better person. You just look at all the things that we've come through. Now to have this opportunity is amazing."

The rise of President Obama has been truly inspirational just like Serena and Venus have been in their own right to so many of millions of young people of all races. What they have achieved with the support of a loving and close family is what dreams are made of and they have proven that hard work combined with an undying vision can take anyone to the very summit of what they desire.

Serena and Venus have opened doors by being the first African Americans to achieve so much. They have allowed others to believe in themselves but what they have achieved, or the doors they have opened is not something that Serena really looks at. She remains focused on the road ahead and all that is still to be done which can be daunting but at the same time very uplifting and exciting.

Serena said: "At the end of my career I always thought I would go back and kind of dwell on that because I don't want to become complacent."

Even though she didn't vote in the last Presidential election because she is a Jehovah's Witness it doesn't mean that she lacks an interest, quite the opposite Serena is certainly interested in matters that are going on around the world.

"For me, because I am black, seeing that happen, I would be blind if I didn't take interest in it or I would be lying if I said I wasn't interested in what was going on; obviously I am," said Serena. "Obviously I was listening to a lot of points that Obama was giving for his election. Some of the things that he said in order to get elected were interesting. I mean, hopefully the right thing will happen. But, you know, I think it's an important position for me to take in my faith."

Hello Serena, I a one of your biggest fans and do feel that my vacation had to be cancelled at the Indian Wells Tournament. I sure hope that one day this will be in the past as that happened years ago. Today we must be able to move forward. I love tennis because of you and your sister and I am African American and would go to Indian Wells to watch you play. Please make a difference and not a scene over past issues. Yes, the new website is nice but needs some touch ups.

Rena: At the BJK Cup, everybody in my section though it was Obama coming out for the ceremonies, and everybody started bugging, then they announced "Bubba", well if Mr. Obana could not be there "BubbA' is the next best choice. Congrats on your win, tell Vee to stop "Hogging" BJK, lol
