Oh That Winning Feeling - Serena Caps Off Year With Another Big Victory

Serena Williams has won the season-ending championship for the second time in her career. The year-end world number one defeated Venus 6-2, 7-6 to win the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, Qatar,
"Playing Venus in the finals was tough," Serena said. "Even though she wasn't feeling good, she was getting every ball back. I can't tell you how frustrating that is! Playing her is never easy.
"Now my losing streak in tournaments that aren't Grand Slams is over! Coming out here and doing well is so exciting. I totally didn't expect to come here and win. My practice at home wasn't going so great, but I just kept fighting."
For Serena this marked her 35th career singles title and the third for 2009. She is the only woman to win two Grand Slam crowns this season, the Australian Open and Wimbledon. She also opened a bit more of a gap between herself and Venus in the head-to-head stakes, it's now 13-10 to Serena and she has beaten big sister the last four times. In finals it's 8-3 to Serena.
Serena last won this event back in 2001 when it was played in Munich; it was on a walkover when Lindsay Davenport was injured. She joins a very select club of players who have won the year-end event more than once - they are Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Chris Evert, Monica Seles, Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Martina Hingis, Gabriela Sabatini and Evonne Goolagong.
Serena and Venus also reached the semi finals of the doubles in Doha.
